The NESTA ECB requires its certified personal fitness trainer (PFT) to complete 4.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over a four year period.
A CEU is a Continuing Education Unit quantified in increments of 0.1 and is roughly equivalent to one hour of live workshop or distance learning study (programs will vary in CEU credit recognition).
Before starting, please refer to the PFT Exam Candidate Handbook for additional information.
NESTA PFT Recertification Checklist
Follow these steps to renew your NESTA Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT) Certification. Choose the correct path depending on whether you have completed your Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
If You Have Completed 4.0 CEUs (40 Hours)
1. Track Your Expiration Date: Certification is valid for 4 years. Renew before expiration. After 90 days past expiration, renewal is forfeited. Not sure when your PFT certification expires? Check your PFT certification status using our PFT Graduate Search tool.
2. Prepare Documentation: Gather proof of attendance for CEUs or official transcripts for college coursework.
3. Submit Renewal Application: Within 90 days of your expiration date, go to and complete the Recertification Application. Upload CEU proof, and payment through the online form.
3a. After submitting your application, you will be redirected to our secure payment page to complete your registration. The application fee is $149. We accept all major credit cards, debit cards, and Affirm.
Your application will not be processed until payment is successfully completed. To avoid late fees and interruptions to your certification status, please renew before your certification expires.
5. Get Confirmation: After approval, your certification is renewed for another 4 years (from your previous expiration date).
If You Have NOT Completed 4.0 CEUs
1. Determine Remaining Hours: Calculate how many CEU hours you still need (out of 40 required).
2. Select CEU Courses: Choose from NESTA/Spencer Institute pre-approved courses, or other approved providers listed below:
2a. If the course/provider is not on the approved list, you must submit a CEU Petition first.
2b. Submit CEU Petition: Go to https://pft.nestacertified.com/ceu-petition/ and provide all required information, including coursework details and payment.
2c. Approval is required before you can include these CEUs in your renewal application.
3. Access the Online Renewal Form: Once CEUs are complete and approved, go to and complete the Recertification Application.
4. Submit Renewal Application: Upload your approved CEU proof, and payment.
5. Get Confirmation: After approval, your certification is renewed for another 4 years (from your previous expiration date).
